Track of the Day: Tough Lovers – Kids Go Out

It’s Friday! The freakin’ weekend! Is it just me or does it seem to arrive more frequently these days? Like the week goes by at hyperspeed and then suddenly we’ve got another two or three days (depending on how you use your Fridays) of ankle-twisting, head-jerking and shoulder-shuffling ahead of us. Yesterday’s Track of the Day was a sweet nu-folk pop ditty to make your heart flutter but Fridays are all about donning your best social carapace, hitting the electric streets of our fine Father City and trying to survive severe alcohol intake. In the spirit of that fine pursuit, today’s Track is from Vancouver’s Tough Lovers, who meld typical softcock indie vocals with something simple to dance to. It’s not an anthem like the indie rock of a half-decade ago, but it’s got me hitting play over and over so it must’ve done something right.

Catch you at the Puma Social Club tonight for Shortstraw and The Frown, at Shikisha (the place currently known as Shikisha) for The Brother Moves On (I’ve seen good things), Beatenberg (I’ve heard good things) and Vampire9000 (more good things!), and on Sunday at Boosh in Greenside for more of the same and drinks to fight The Mighty God Hangover. Monday Morning Yoga may as well be called “Murder”.

Red Bull Studio Live at Oppikoppi Sweet Thing [Video]

Check out this video from Red Bull Studio, directed by Rowan Pybus. Sure, we’re all coughing up sandbags of dust, but I bet we’re all missing the bass of this unforgettable stage. I especially love the commentary in the video, it epitomises everything Oppikoppi stands for, not just Red Bull Studio Live.

Sunday in The City with Beach Party & The Frown [Interview/Video]

This past Sunday saw the Another-Day team hustle on over to the Maboneng Precinct on Jo’burg CBD’s sexy Eastern borderlands, where we showed up for a gig presented by Feiyue Footwear, featuring the talents of locals The Frown, Shadowclub and Cape Town’s Beach Party. While the gig was supposed to be on a rooftop, a gas leak the night before got everyone into Black Box, a warehouse space just across the street that, I think, suited the crowd well.

We sat down with Eve and Nick from The Frown, and the entire crew from Beach Party (and a largely silent DJ Sassquatch) for a chat about their sound, the city and where they’re headed next.

WOW Metallic Kiss [Video]

Local dream pop outfit The Frown premiered their fantastic new video at Mash in Newtown on Saturday night. The track’s great and the visuals by Cool Your Jets are amazing. When we spoke to her about it last week, Eve Rakow described the video as “a hipster snuff film” and it’s a beautifully put together one at that.

Watch it below and see for yourself.

METALLIC KISS Right on the Cheek

So this Saturday The Frown will be launching their new music video and you know what that means, right? Party Time! The line up has been handpicked by The Frown’s Eve Rakow and Another-Day is super-excited to be attending. The music video for ‘Metallic Kiss’ was done by Cool Your Jets and that’s great news seeing how amazing his last music video for Vampire9000 was. The party’s happening at Mash in Newtown, tucked behind Town Hall, and we never say no to a night out in Jo’burg. We also got a chance to chat with Eve about The Frown and the launch party, and to check out some of the tracks by the night’s other performers.
