Bloc Party are Two Kinds of Band

When you get down to the brass and the balls of it, there are really two kinds of live act: there are bands that play like The Beatles and bands that play like The Rolling Stones. Both were great, but The Beatles stood on stage, swaying back and forth, smiling like school boys, and the crowd screamed and fainted. The Rolling Stones hopped around on stage and Keith Richards found a couple dozen inventive ways to play the guitar – inspiring guys like Pete Townshend and Jimi Hendrix to do the same – and were able to do crazy shit like incite riots and cause murders. The Beatles gave us the concept album and a level of pop artistry that you can trace directly from them through pop music history to artists like Michael Jackson. The Rolling Stones gave us the epic teeth-gritting ecstatic rock operatics that make some bands’ world tours into environmental hazards. It makes sense that one of these bands lives on through music and the other one is still performing worldwide (mind the dead Beatles).

So which kind of band is Bloc Party?

Track of the Day: AlunaGeorge – Watching Over You

Hey everyone, hope you had a great Weekend In The City (see what I did there?). How awesome was Bloc Party? Pity about the crap sound, but I’m not complaining, I got to see one of my favourite bands! In case you still want more from the Londoners, take a look here to see all of their music videos, including the latest one for the single ‘Kettling’.

Here’s something new from our other London favourites, AlunaGeorge. The sound of 8-bit, lasers and Aluna Francis’s poppy RnB vocals, mixed together with a simple yet very enticing video, definitely make it worthy of today’s TotD. This track is featured on BBC Radio 1′s Annie Mac’s 2012 Compilation, and I can only hope that it’ll also be on their upcoming album.

VIDEOS of the Day: Bloc Party

Just double checking here – Bloc Party are playing In the City in Jo’burg tonight. True/False? According to my calendar and Facebook newsfeed, this is very true. That’s cool. That’s pretty OOOHHHHMERGAAAWDFUCKYEAHBLOCPARTYINJHBINANDAROUNDMYMOUTH kinda cool. It gets even better with the awesome bands that are supporting them like Shadowclub, Tumi feat. Yesterday’s Pupil, Die Antwoord and DJ Yoda.

I really don’t know what track to put here for the TotD. “What’s your favourite Bloc Party track?” is the mindfuck of the day. Most of you are probably playing through all of the albums in your iTunes already. So instead, I’ve decided to put all of their music videos in one place for you to watch, including the new one ‘Kettling‘, which was released yesterday. My visually favourite of the lot is by far ‘Flux‘ and the Armand Van Helden remix of ‘Signs‘. What’s yours?

See you In the City tonight! God Bless Bloc Party.

Track of the Day: Bloc Party – Day Four

This is a classic Bloc Party track. When I say that, I mean that ‘Day Four‘ could easily be featured on any of their albums and it’d fit right in. Fortunately for us, it’s a new track off of the upcoming album, Four. Trust me on this – put on some headphones, close your eyes, and press play. ‘Day Four‘ gives me the same chills as when I listen to ‘Signs‘, and it’s probably only a matter of time until this new track plays some relevant role during a special moment in my life. We’re counting down the days. Have you got your tickets yet?

Track of the Day: Bloc Party – Octopus

Well let’s be honest, after this video was released last night, could there really be any other Track of the Day? Bloc Party bring us their first single off Four. ‘Octopus‘ yet again shows us the growth of Bloc Party as a band and proves most good things in life get better with age. Fast, hard and catchy, this song is everything Bloc. I love the guitar so much in this song, I will probably make babies to it. If there were any doubts about the boys coming back strong, they have been tossed to the wayside. Have a listen and God Bless Bloc Party!!

God Bless Bloc Party

With the big announcement yesterday, I decided to look back at Bloc Party’s music and how it literally shaped who and what I am today. I was 18, misguided, ever-confused and totally ready to have my eyes opened to the world. Their sound captured my youth, indulged my crazy bouts and told me that it was okay to be different. That there were people like me who felt the same and reacted the same. This is a love letter to four guys from London who made me the person I am today.
