We didn’t crack an invite for the Ster Kinekor pre-screening of The Wolverine tonight but that’s ok. We can always go home, make microwave popcorn and fire up our pirated copy of its predecessor (and the prequel to the original X-Men movies), X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and revel in its sheer brutal awfulness for an hour or two.

I am, apparently, the only human being in existence South Africa who thoroughly enjoyed Iron Man 3. I enjoyed it so much because it was a rare opportunity seized by filmmakers to produce an actual movie/film based on a comic book, rather than yet another movie that attempted to be said comic book.
I don’t think it’ll surprise anyone to read that one of my major concerns in life is racial identity and representation. It’s a topic that crops up from time to time in comics media but the issue is undermined largely by middle class white dudes who shrug and say “why does everything always have to be about race?”.

Marvel Comics has created some of the most popular and beloved superhero characters we can think of. Spider-Man, the X-Men, Thor, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, the Hulk, Captain America, that one guy with the bow and arrow who doesn’t get named in the Avengers movie. They’ve created icons, and so it’s nice to see those characters celebrated as nothing more than icons.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: when you’re reading superhero comics, suspend your motherfucking disbelief. If you start to think too hard about what would make them realistic, you’ll end up with a Superman who can’t move without shattering the Earth, and a Batman who’s lying in an alleyway somewhere, twitching as blood flows freely from a fresh gunshot wound to his face.

For most people, the war for the Number #1 superhero movie spot this year probably went to either Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises, but for me there was only one clear winner: The Amazing Spider-Man. I loved the way it balanced out the humanistic and emotional elements that make Spider-Man the greatest character in superhero comics, with the visually entertaining and interesting action sequences that make him one of the most fun characters to watch.

In a world obsessed with darkness and world-ending catastrophes, superheroes are supposed to be the answer to our feelings of despair: the few who can, through their own resilience, hold off the darkness in human souls. Marvel’s Iron Man is the perfect example of a normal guy (you know, minus the genius intellect and unlimited budget) with normal character flaws (alcoholism and douchiness) who can stave off the end of the world by nuking a sentient alien race like it’s nothing and then go back to his day-to-day activities of generating insane revenue and giving the US military-industrial complex several mild coronaries.

It’s a weird world where the trailers for movies are so popular that they get their own trailers, but that’s the world we live in. So here it is, the teaser for the trailer for Iron Man 3. The trailer itself comes out later this week but you can find the official plot blurb below.
