Thug Thursdays: Mos Def & A Little Aretha

By Kat Maponyane

“Thug” has many faces and comes in different forms. It may not necessarily always be Rap/Hip Hop and RnB. It will be old and also new. Hell, I may even throw some country into the pot, or whatever I deem to be “thug”. Depending on my mood, every week I’ll be bringing you my selection of the worst, best, funniest, weirdest videos whether you may have seen them or not.

I’ve been filled with nostalgia for the past little while now. I think it could be due to the fact that I haven’t been able to drive since I snapped my Achilles tendon, so spending a lot of time in the passenger’s seat has felt like high school days and being driven around by my parents all over again.

Mos Def and all the other allies of Rawkus Records were the musical highlights of my tween years. Out of all the incredible tracks that came from that time, ‘Ms. Fat Booty‘, from the Black On Both Sides album was possibly the biggest and most catchy of them all. Ever since that I think most people you know exactly what you mean when you say, “Ass so fat that you can see it from the front.”

I once told my friend’s ex-girlfriend her ass was as flat as the old world. She didn’t get it, but we all know an ass has to have some sort of atlas globe roundness to it whether you’re male or female. FYI – The ideal female rump should apparently look like that of a 10-year-old French boy. Don’t ask, just accept it as fact.

Here’s a little Thug Thursday history lesson. The sample used is from Aretha Franklin’s “One Step Ahead” 1965 classic. It still sounds so good.
