This was a recent TEDx talk someone dropped me a link to. A pretty interesting discussion of “The American Hipster”, but really more of a discussion on the culture and behavior of Generation-Y in general. He raises some key points surrounding the “hipster” character that I’ve discussed elsewhere and will probably do s’more talking about soon as well. Most importantly, he recognizes the base desire of a subculture to remain misunderstood and unclaimed in order to preserve a sense of legitimacy. Or, to put it simply, he points out why hipsters are always so fucking ironic about everything.

One thing I will add to this discussion is that this sentiment and these occurrences aren’t entirely new. They’ve been sped up slightly, because of how fast information travels in Century21, but mostly they’re just the traits of any burgeoning counter-cultural ideas’ transition into the mainstream and collective consciousness (rather than just the unconscious). So, hipsters behave like every other subculture did before them, but are more aware of it, and therefore more prone to self-inflicted ignorance and escapism.
Hi, I’m Nas Who, and I am a filthy hipster.
