Artists You Should Know: Grimes [Tracks]

If you haven’t heard about Grimes yet, here’s the skinny. She’s Claire Boucher from Canada. Her music career started in 2010 with her debut album Geidi Primes, which, strangely enough, was released on cassette tape. In 2012 she was picked up by British label 4AD after her successful tour with Lykke Li, who she opened for stateside. This year she released her third album Oblivion, which has been met with great success. I think you should get to know her a little better, so let’s all get ensnared in her dream pop.

Grimes’ sound is an amalgamation of pop music vocals, the dreamy sounds of synths and the relentless bopping drumming of trip hop drum machines. Her dreamlike vocals steal you away with their soft gentle nuances. The melodies of the soft synth wrap you into the experience and the drumbeats bop you along to complete a great sound. Grimes stands in the middle-ground of pop and experimental, calling her own music “eligiosity and psychedelic revelry” and “hyper-futuristic filter”. She mostly falls into the new genre known as “witch house”. A new form of experimental music, which focuses on the use of synths and drum machines to create a dreamlike sound. Her new album Oblivion flows together brilliantly and is truly a great listen. With tracks like Genesis, Skin, Nightmusic and the title track, Oblivion, Grimes has made an album which is truly cohesive in what would normally be a group of mismatched sounds. We strongly advise that You get your hands on it.
