In Ready To Fit, we approach garment appreciation with the same level of snide geekiness that you’ve come to associate with this fine web establishment. This week we investigate Rei Kawakubo accidentally drawing inspiration from Kirsten Wiig and the ongoing trend of “quirkiness” at this season’s international fashion weeks.
But before we get into the ridiculousness and yarn, can we please take a moment to pay our respects to Marilyn Riseman, the highly influential Boston style icon who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 86.
We have already investigated some strange goings on at this season’s Autumn/Winter fashion with the quizzical disaster that was Rodarte’s Star Wars dresses but it would appear that the fashion world refuses to stop there. For when I looked upon Comme des Garçons’ latest offering at Paris Fashion week, I was instantly reminded of something:
The amazingness that was the SNL skit Being Quirky with Zooey Deschanel seems to not only have hit upon every single annoying thing about being quirky, but has accidentally predicted this year’s trends of all the well-to-do fashion houses (not really). So let’s break it down and see how far we can take this ludicrous notion, one quirky moment at a time!
First up we have the lady herself, Zooey, who is a bit of a favorite of the Another-Day team. She draws inspiration from past generations, likes to wear dresses from her aunt, knits brand new vintage sweaters and generally enjoys being a girly girl. I’m sure she would love Givanchy’s flowing butterfly dresses and be totally into Saint Laurent’s mod Paris school girl chic (I meeeeeeean… look at all those bows!).
Next up we have her BFF, Mary Kate (played by the real Zooey no less), who stylishly wears electric blankets and makes ingenious multi-functional knitwear. Although if she has to wear something reminiscent of a coffee cosy, may it at least look something like Peter Pilotto‘s work. And while she’s at it I would suggest grabbing some food and an updated electric blanket suit jacket from Karl Lagerveld’s Chanel supermarket. But in all seriousness, eat something.
We’ve already established that Bjork and Rei are pretty tight with octopi but she also raised the pretty good point that the best way to find wonderful quirky inspiration is from quirky people’s favorite thing in the world: “upcycling.” And the best examples from this season is the wonderful scout fabric patches and metal trinkets of Mary Katrantzou and the way Dries van Noten took a flower and made it fashion.
Even the token “boy” of the group, Micheal Cera, made his contribution of influence while creeping in the kitchen. Granted Moschino‘s take on serving cute things on a platter is infinitely more of a vibe but also a whole lot more quirky (Sponge Bob?! For Serious?).
And none of this would be possible without the influence of the founder of quirky girls, Blossom star Mayim Bialik, who I think has single-handedly influenced the style of The Queen of Quirky, Vivienne Westwood, for years (LOL, yeah, not even a little).
Now I am fully aware that this line of comparison is completely fucking ridiculous but hey, so are a lot of things in the fashion world. Like how not a single fashion week in the world is actually 7 days long, or that they call commercials “fashion films”, or that people for some reason like Cara Delevigne (I meeeeeeeean?!). But without it we would have people like Rei Kawakubo just roaming the streets, spouting annoying haikus, and then what would all the idealistic octopi in the world wear?
