You and I probably encounter art on a near daily basis, but how much do we really know about it?
But Is It Aht? is Another-Day‘s attempt to quantify the stuff we see by taking shitty photographs of it all with our futurefones and sharing them with you. What we really want to know is… what do you think? Is this art? What does it all mean? Who are you even?
Sue Williamson launched her exhibition, All Our Mothers, last night at Goodman Gallery in Rosebank, which honours the incredible women who have fought for the freedom that shaped the new South Africa. This, in contrast with the generation gap of their grandaughters, “the confident born frees”. A video installation titled There’s Something I Must Tell You captures 6 conversations between the older and younger women, discussing the comparison of the South Africa they have lived in. I’ll admit, my knowledge of political history is next to nothing, but in the photographs I felt an extreme yet quiet empowerment from these women. It reminded me of the stories my grandmother told me about her life, although not about political struggle, it always made me recognise the social change between us and appreciate the life I live today.
