Who says there’s nothing to do in Joburg? The Beard will tell you what’s going on and keep you up to date with new music, events, gigs and exhibitions in and around our city.

This week: Escape The City with Another-Day at Red Room.

Unplugged Wednesdays @ ODD Cafe (18/09)

Unplugged Wednesdays at ODD Cafe is one of the best places to find great up and coming musicians. Tonight sees our ears graced by Sean Hayz, Jono Dangoumou, and Allan Muir. It’s going to be great!

 

Diptych Group Exhibition (19/09)

Check out Diptych, a group exhibition opening at 17 Wolmarans, Braamfontein on Thursday. The exhibition will run until the end of September coinciding with the Joburg Art Fair weekend. On the opening night you can check out an awesome musical line-up that includes The Stella’s (acoustic set), Half ‘n Half and Pop Art Live. There will be pizza, wine, music and of course art. Sounds like a really good night out!

 

HOWL – Naming James (19/09)

Naming James are one of the most exciting bands in Johannesburg, their upbeat folk style songs just make you want to dance. Want to dance? Well then, head on over to Wolves this Thursday to check them out. Entrance is of course free, but there will be a tip jar for the band. Oh, and cupcakes, Wolves has great cupcakes!

 

Spring Space Jam (20/09)

This Friday, get to MiHouse in Selby!  There will be two stages of bands and DJs that include Adventure Man, Los Castillos, Gangsterdam, The Stellas (DJ set), Feed The Animals, Half n Half, Prototype, Dead Alphabet, Double Adapter and more. Tickets will be available at the door  for R60 before 22:00 and R80 after. Dress up in something out of this world and stand a chance to win awesome prizes.  Plus there’ll be a photo booth! All proceeds will be donated to charity.

 

A TRIP WITH EGO (Aus) (20/09)

Half Visual Artist, half DJ, Ego (Aus) delivers continually innovating new approaches to live performance and digital arts, and he’s coming to Town Hall on Friday! Playing alongside him is Blunt B (Aus), Liver, DJ Danger Ingozi and David & Goliath. Tickets are available from Webtickets for R60, or it’s R80 at the door.

 

Peace Starts in the City (21/09)

Peace Starts in the City is a free rock and hip hop concert featuring some of SA’s top acts that promotes The International Day of Peace, happening at SkyRoomLive on Saturday. The event features bands like WONDERboom, Shortstraw and more. Entrance is free, but you gotta get your tickets here. It’s going to be raaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!

 

YOH! Under The Sea (21/09)

YOH! is coming to Jozitown and its getting wet at Kitchener’s this Saturday! They’ve put together a fantastic line up and now all you’ve got to do is rock up. Featuring Sassquatch, Yo Grapes, DJ Danger Ingozi, Grmmz Grmmz (CPT), Boyz2men (CPT), and WTVR (CPT). R20 damage before 9pm and R30 thereafter.

 

Matthew Mole, Nakhane Toure & Bye Beneco @ Tanz Live (21/09)

Folk music at its greatest. Bye Beneco, Nakhane Toure and Matthew Mole will be live at Tanz Live on Saturday. Entrance is R100. Make sure you don’t miss this, they’re all great musicians!

 

Another-Day & Red Room present: Escape The City (21/09)

Are you tired of Braamies? Maboneng? Tired of Greenside? Melville? Well the guys from Another-Day here are throwing a party and they’re heading away from your normal hangouts and going west. Remember Red Room? Well if you don’t, its a pretty rad place. I haven’t been to Red Room in years and didn’t even know it was still going, but thanks to Another-Day we get to party there again on Saturday with so some rad DJs that most of you are acquainted with. On decks for the night is Half ‘n Half, Casioheart, Shuffleshame, Nikki and Darla Dark! Entrance is R40. Still not convinced? Watch the infomercial and win some tickets.

 

SUMO – HOUSE PARTY (23/09)

SUMO is bringing back the old school house parties we all used to love! Coming your way on Monday (the next day is a public holiday) at 32 Keyes Avenue, Rosebank, is a rad line-up of DJs that will be bringing you that heavyweight bass. The line-up includes Half-Life (CT), Danger Ingozi, Feed The Animals and more. Entrance is R60 and it’s limited, so get there early. Doors open 5PM. You can win yourself a double ticket here.

 

Ray-Ban Presents: Jozi On Fire with Trevor Rebello & Gangsterdam (23/09)

Jozi on Fire is back this Monday at Openroom Studios, and it just keeps getting better and better! This month sees the awesome Trevor Rebello and Gangsterdam. Music starts at 8pm and it’s free entrance. The next day’s a public holiday, so you don’t have to take the next day off as usual.

 

phunktional 2013 (24/09)

On Tuesday, get to Toadhall Farm in Sandton for phunktional. Matthew Mole, Yo Grapes, Adventure Man, and Trevor Rebello will be performing. There will be a cash bar and food stalls. Parking is limited (so car pool yo), plus it’s R20 for parking. Entrance is R80 but for a line-up this good, it’s totally worth it!

 

It’s about the music, man! FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL (24/09)

Get to The Library in Sandton on Tuesday for the mother of all folk music festivals! With a 2 stage line-up that includes Naming James, Matthew Mole, Shotgun Tori, Father & Son and more, R100 for a ticket is definitely worth it. Check out the event page for more details. Its all about the music man!
