The Aztec Sapphire is a Capetonian 4-piece band that someone led me to a few months ago and I just haven’t stopped enjoying them since. There are suddenly a lot of local bands popping up, it’s a big change from how things used to be. The problem is that they still don’t get enough coverage and sometimes we miss them.

Annika de Korte, an artist with a passion for bold and colourful visuals, is based in Cape Town and really caught my eye with her work. Western Cape Coasters (pictured above) are my favourite pieces by her. The hand-rendered typography (in some of the pieces) is so fucking rad and the slight variations between all the coasters really bring them into their own light as individual artworks.

Cape Town based illustrator and animator Gerhard Human creates artworks that are set in seemingly simple scenarios, yet have a mind blowing amount of exaggeration in terms of the details he provides each object. My favourite piece of Human’s, partly seen above, is titled Obscured by Clouds, and features a simple colour palette and immense line work that make me feel like I’m that guy in the image; eyes closed, falling amidst the chaos.

Synth-pop five-piece Clubfeet is what happens when musicians from Melbourne and Cape Town come together. They released their debut album, Heirs and Graces, back in January to critical acclaim. The band are currently touring across Oz with Panama, another five-piece fronted by Jarrah McCleary, another Australian synth wunderkind. Cape Town is a single off Heirs and Graces, remixed by Panama here and available for free download below.

Diamond Thug, the Cape Town-based band composed of Chantel Van T, Danilo Queiros and Adrian Culhane, toured Jo’burg recently and they definitely left an impression. Especially at their show at The (“new”) Bohemian. In case you weren’t able to see them, here’s their first official music video for Man Who Makes The Law.

So as it turns out, not everything about Cape Town is awful. Derick Watts & The Sunday Blues are a Cape Town comedy duo who’ve done a lot of cool shit on their YouTube channel, including a Rebecca Black parody called “Braaiday“. With Justin Bieber in town, the Blues took to the stadium grounds to find out just how much his fans love their hero.
It’s happened. Beach Party - one of Another-Day‘s favourite bands – have released their 7 track EP, For Now We Are Young. They’ve also made it available to download via Mediafire, which means it’s free! The album itself has a well mastered sound that will leave you reminiscing about summer and is a sure sign of the band’s hard work and progression, all the while not losing any of their cheeky charm and attitude.
So as you may’ve heard, a local Comic Con was announced a few days ago. Seeing as how the Comic Con International held annually in San Diego, California is an enormous deal, basically functioning as geek Mecca (or, you know, Makkah), you know this got all of us pretty freakin’ excited.
