Every year, MK – South Africa’s only dedicated Afrikaans rock and alternative (and occasionally electro) music channel – holds an awards ceremony at Pretoria’s State Theatre. It’s kind of a big deal, filled with South African musicians you’ve probably heard of (and a few I haven’t), and lots of ladies in the right kinds of dresses.

We had a brief conversation yesterday about one of our favorite local bands and how they’re supremely underrated for what truly makes them great: their mastery of melody and their lyricist’s incredible storytelling ability. I think it’s something that’s overlooked a lot in music, especially locally, both by fans and musicians.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: Pretoria has never made sense to me.
What I do get, however, is why folks would want to party like drunk indie rockstars there. That’s why we were in P-Town anyway: for the first leg of The Desmond & The Tutus ‘MNUSIC’ album launch tour.
Every weekend in Jo’burg brings with it an opportunity to party. Whether you like to get tanked, dance hard or play chess in a dark corner while people get tanked and dance hard around you, Jo’burg will provide you with options. The Another-Day team can’t be everywhere at once (although we try), but we do like to know what’s going on, just in case, and we bet you do, too.
“I’m not racist but I will hit you!” one of the jocks declares, grabbing the self-appointed car guard by the scruff of his tattered luminous vest and slamming him up against the fence. Not that the car guard called him a racist, but I guess he felt he should get his alibi out the way before things got rough.
