“A Rainbow Bukkake” – We Are One Joburg 2013 [Photos/UPDATE]

WE ARE ONE

On Saturday April 6th, the varied people of Joburg’s East, South, West and North descended on Emmarentia Dam for the first ever We Are One festival. The festival aimed to bring South Africans from all cultures, races and walks of life together in one space in a celebration of color and unity, but most importantly, it was about having a great fucking time.

And now we’ve updated it.
UPDATE:

Out of respect for the promoters and organizers, Another-Day has decided to remove our video of the We Are One event. Thanks for watching, y’all.

The festival was inspired by the Hindu Holi festival of colors, in which color represents unity. Or, as one of the pleasant people we interviewed put it, “it’s all about the spirit of togetherness”. The team at Seed Experiences went all out in preparation for this one, securing some great acts from the EDM scene to take to the stage in what was probably the best organized day-festival I’ve ever been to. Bars that stretched on for days; a multitude of food options and a bang-up job on the PR and media side thanks to the team at One-Eyed Jack.

What more could you ask for, really?

The Another-Day team had a pretty fucking amazing time at the event, getting to interview the sort of crowd we never encounter, and experiencing the parts of Jo’burg I’d forgotten about completely. And believe me when I say, those boys from the East, North, South and West seemed to be on top form.

UPDATED: See for yourself in our video and gallery below.

  • Catherine Andrews

By far the most emmbarressing video and the least true interpretation of South Africa, you took a bunch of idiotic interviews and put it on a tape…. thats a very small population of people that are that stupid!! #dissapointedtobesouthafrican

  • Louis van der Walt

So this video has, to much surprise, become a very heated topic. I’m not one to usually comment on the “scene” out there as I generally refer to it, but for this I’m going to make an exception.
I know for the most part, my opinion, just like your opinion, is largely irrelevant. For this tho, I’m going to voice it anyway.
The video, the editing and the portrayal of the festival by the Another-day team can be seen as a huge success in terms of the massive exposure it has gained after being posted merely one day ago. It’s created a platform for discussion, provoked emotions and opinions. Hell it’s even gotten me to take time from my life to write this.
Does it portray the event and what it set out to achieve negatively? I don’t think so. The event was a success. people came together, bonded as a nation of young adults. They might have been disappointing in terms of what the event planners had hoped for, but isn’t that what generally happens with expectations?
Does it make fun of South-Africans, and show the nation as ignorant fools? No, again I don’t think so. It’s not posible to do so by showcase a handful of individuals.
Does it comment negatively on the hindu religion? Again no it does not. Beyond that the festival was open to all walks of life, not only religious followers.
Could it have been edited to portray the event in a different light and so shine a light of class and sophistication on these festival goers ? Yes, probably with effort.
Would that have been an honest an truthful portrayal of the event? No absolutely not.
And here is the point that I hope will stick. It was portrayed for what the another- day team experienced and witnessed.
IT WAS WHAT IT WAS! AND IT HAS BEEN SHOWCASED AS EXACTLY THAT!

Did they pay you to remove it, or threaten to sue you? I find it very sad. We don’t need to ‘respect’ the promoters; they made their money…#freedomofspeech much?
