VSP Pool Club, The New 24/7 Hangout in Sandton

I had the opportunity to visit the new VSP Pool Club in Sandton (126 Rivonia Rd.) last week, which consists of 5 food stores that are open 24 hours and deliver for free in Sandton. The event held there was actually a Playboy launch party, but just like the (local) magazine, it wasn’t too impressive. The pool tables there are really snazzy, there’s a couple of poker tables and even a decently sized dancefloor. I think VSP will do really well for after-work business, as there are a shitload of the offices surrounding it, so it’s definitely a great place to go and loosen your tie and have a drink after a hard day’s work. When it comes to the after hours however, I’m not sure if the 24/7 pool club and food court will be sustainable.

I made sure that I went sort of late-ish to VSP, just to kind of get an idea of what was in store for the crowds heading there for the chilled afterparty. The first thing about VSP is that it’s sort of out of the way. Yes, it’s around the corner from Sandton City and Village Walk, but it would’ve been ideal to set this spot up in a more active area, with other bars or clubs literally next door. This concept is something more adapted to be in a city where people can actually walk the streets at night, or even in Braamfontein with everyone walking back and fourth between Great Dane and the Puma Social Club. There are also no ATMs in the centre VSP is located in, and you have to pay for parking, so it’s not as easy as a simple drive-thru. It’s definitely a place where you gotta sit down and chill for a bit before heading home.

The variety of food available is impressive though, so there is definitely something for everyone’s palate. Between the 5 stores, one can get sushi, wraps, toasted sandwiches, croissants and noodles. All with a vegetarian option. To be honest, I didn’t see any people buying food and coffee, which is why I question the longevity of the 24/7 concept. Will people want to come past here after their party, or will they just want to go to their local McDonalds around the corner and make a mess in the car?
