Aaaaaaand we’re back (finally) with another edition of Another-Damn-Podcast, the official podcast here at Another-Day. On this episode, Nas, Werner and special guest star Andile sit down to deconstruct comics as counter-culture and, you know, popular culture too. We catch up on Marvel Studios’ upcoming film slate, Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness and nobody’s favorite movie, Man of Steel. Listen to (or download) the podcast and check out the post below for our show notes.

Firstly, we address Jordan’s absence from this episode of the podcast, and once that’s out of the way, we jump pretty much straight into the endless geekfest, kicking things off with the latest news from Marvel Studios and their Guardians of the Galaxy property.
Nas: And Guardians of the Galaxy is based on, like, a lesser known property (obviously, cos you’ve never heard of it. And they cast Benecio Del Toro and they cast…
Werner: That’s the only person that matters.
Nas: Nah, they’ve announced some other cast members.
Werner: Bette Midler!
Nas: I would watch the fuck out of Bette Midler.
**************************************************************
And then Andile really gets into deconstructing why he hated Iron Man 3.
Andile: I literally watched Iron Man 3 literally 3 hours before coming here. Holy fuck. Fuck that film.
…
Andile: When I started reading Iron Man growing up, it was always back issues from the early 90s and 80s, and that was like super-weird [sic] Christian Tony Stark. Kind of always in, like, AA, going around talking about his problems, and how, like, the Iron Man figure is like a Christ figure that helped him grow through his problems. So he’s saving the world and that’s helping him as Tony Stark… Fucking hated that!
**************************************************************
And then we talk about a comic you’ve probably never heard of but should definitely be reading, Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ Saga.
Nas: Andile, I don’t know if you’ve read Saga by Brian K Vaughan?
…
Nas: The opening page of issue 1 is literally a close-up of the sweating woman’s face, as she goes, “Am I shitting? It feels like I’m shitting”, cos she’s giving birth. Um… and it’s good from then on.

We follow this up with our Must See Movie review, exploring JJ Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness and waxing on about the original Star Trek sequel’s villain Khan. It is a segment that is filled with more than a few references to our love of man-on-man porn and, you know, Star Wars.
Werner: The reason why this film works so well is because it’s not a Star Trek film. It almost reads, from the first scene to about, let’s say, a quarter of the way into the film, as a Star Wars movie.
…
Werner: …you need your bad guy and your hero to, you know, interact in a physical sense… I just went very gay. Again.
…
Andile: It’s like the original Khan was the guy, the kid from Spur all grown up, do you know what I mean?
Werner: He’s pretty much, if you had to have a human version of Predator. That’s what he would be. This alpha male space hunter in leather.
Andile: Or like a very angry version of Rufio from that Peter Pan film.
Also tune in for Werner’s perfect impersonation of Leonard Nimoy. And then it’s off to our Thin Line segment, where we try our best to express our confusion and distaste for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel even as we try to explain our love for Superman.
Nas: I know I wanna write a Man of Steel review… it’s so emotional for me that I’m struggling to write it… This is a movie that made me cry. And not in the way Up made me cry in the first 10 minutes, because it’s so beautiful and amazing.
Andile: You cried in Up!?
…
Andile: I just wanna say one nice thing about Man of Steel, it is probably the greatest sequel to… Independence Day we will ever have. Cos what the fuck was that? An alien just comes here and fucks shit up.
All that and more, kids. Just listen right here or download the damn thing.
