Every year, MK – South Africa’s only dedicated Afrikaans rock and alternative (and occasionally electro) music channel – holds an awards ceremony at Pretoria’s State Theatre. It’s kind of a big deal, filled with South African musicians you’ve probably heard of (and a few I haven’t), and lots of ladies in the right kinds of dresses.
Seriously, I spent at least an hour destroying any shred of feminist cred I still have using nothing but my mind’s eye. There’s a lot of free champagne and even more waiters who don’t realize they’re offering you your fifth glass before what’s treated as a very serious awards ceremony. It’s basically the SAMAs for white people.
What follows is an attempt at explaining to you what it was like being there at the 2013 MK Awards using the sorts of interviews only two drunk morons with a 5D and an iPhone could conduct. You’re gonna love it.
