Little known and possibly completely made up fact: 30 is the exact number of chefs it takes to complete a meat puzzle. And that’s science. That’s why each year Another-Day selects 30 people we really like, 30 people we feel have either really achieved something or 30 people who consistently do amazing work, and we ask them to review the previous year’s cultural output. Today, two of those people are Andile Mbete and Roxanne Robinson.
We ask each participant in 30 People On 2014 for four simple things. They tell us what movies we should’ve watched, what music we should’ve heard, the best thing about their 2014, and what they hope is to come in 2015. This is what they said…
Andile Mbete is the most popular man in three cities. He’s also a researcher.
Your Favorite Movie from 2014 (and why, if you dig)
Even though I haven’t physically gone to the movies much this year, piracy kept me abreast with what Hollywood had to offer. It hasn’t been a bad year for movies at all. It’s a pity that I’m such a cheapskate I would’ve (should’ve) spent good money at the cinema.
My movie of the year is probably Guardians of the Galaxy. As a man who struggles with the notion of growing up, GOTG easily lived up to my childhood fantasies and gave me a green Zoe Saldana, which I weirdly found immensely attractive.
Your Favorite Song from 2014 (we know this one’s hard so choose what comes to mind)
More than anything, this year I realised how disposable music has become to me recently. A lot of music came out this year but there were very few standout moments for me. If anything, 2014 has been an incredible year for local music and the most outstanding local musical offering this year is undoubtedly Petite Noir’s Chess. A powerful indie pop piece that displays Petite Noir’s growth as an artist, Chess is definitely going to be a major feature on my iTunes for a while.
Your Best Moment of 2014 (this can be personal or something that impacted society as a whole)
When it comes to best moments of 2014, I genuinely don’t have one. It’s not like the year has been terrible but as far as highlights I’m pretty sure the AD readers aren’t interested. However, without being specific, a lot of bad shit has gone down this year that’s really challenged the fabric of our society and brought about a growing sense of anger and discussion about the world we live in. For me, this is good thing because it’s about time we change a few things around here, the world is getting smelly and we haven’t changed the sheets in ages.
The Thing You’re Looking Forward To In 2015 (what do you know will happen, or hope will come around in 2015)
2015 is all about new beginnings for me. New job, new place, can’t wait to see what’s in store. BUT the only thing we should all concern ourselves with is the release of the new Star Wars film happening at the end of the year. If I have ever needed a reason to stop my reckless lifestyle and ensure my own survival for a year it’s SW7. It’s the only thing that matters.

Chef – for the sarmies and the scene where they sing along to Sexual Healing.
Your Best Moment of 2014 (this can be personal or something that impacted society as a whole)
I bought a car, I completed that stupid 100 unhappy days thing on Instagram and I learned a lot at work. Also, it was a flipping great year of good Saturdays with friends.
The Thing You’re Looking Forward To In 2015 (what do you know will happen, or hope will come around in 2015)
We’re working on some pretty big and exciting things at Sunday Times Fashion Weekly (which is where I work) so this is a 2015 treat for me and for you to look forward to.
