You could fill entire ancient tomes with my love poems about The Rock. And now he’s Hollywood’s new Hercules. Admittedly, it’s not the strongest trailer ever devised but if you love Dwayne Johnson, action movies and swords, you’re probably gonna love it.
For me, it’s just nice to see an action movie set in Greco-Roman times that isn’t aping the look of 300 or its ill-devised sequel. Instead the look here is way more in the style of Troy or even shows like HBO’s Rome. Of course if anything is working against this picture it’s the film’s director, Brett Ratner, who is probably most famous for making X-Men 3, a movie that was somehow more dated than its predecessor.
In terms of his work in movies so far, Dwayne Johnson has managed to push his career forward primarily through assuming strong supporting roles. His ability to be either the perfect straight man in Fast & Furious 5 and 6, or being a crazed drug-addled Christian nutcase in Pain & Gain are what put him back on most people’s radars. His ability to carry a film all on his own is still something I’m not sure he can do.
So yeah, it doesn’t look amazing but I have a rule and that means seeing every movie The Rock makes because if it’s not good, it’ll at least be fun. So yes, I’m ready for The Rock as Hercules. Are you?
