Following up yesterday’s tease of the new Batmobile, Visionary Director Zack Snyder released a photograph of the new Batman in his full suit, standing in front of the new Batmobile, and SadBatman meme heaven ensued.
Here’s the black & white shot Snyder offered up yesterday, showing off a distinctly more comic book-styled Batman, with much shorter bat ears on his famous cowl than usual, and a much stronger focus on that buff physique.
The outfit immediately evokes a sense of an elderly Batman as rendered by artist/writer Frank Miller in his well known comic series, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. It is, however, probably fair to assume that Ben Affleck will portray a much younger Batman than Miller’s series depicted, although that version did take on Superman in a fight, much to the annoyance of everyone who reads comics regularly and has to go through seeing that moment relived in diluted form over and over for the rest of our lives.
As you might expect from a guy who cried during Man of Steel, I don’t much care how good this movie might look because I consider Zack Snyder a director whose reliance on style over substance means his movies always look good (or gaudy) but never focus enough on character interaction. They feel like very visually impressive but utterly soulless productions. Case in point, Batman isn’t just standing in this photograph, he is looking down at the ground, very serious, naval-gazing. That at least prompted the creation of a new #SadBatman meme to go along with Sad Kanye and Sad Keanu.
