Little known and possibly completely made up fact: 30 is an impossible number to build out of paper mache. And that’s science. That’s why each year Another-Day selects 30 people we really like, 30 people we feel have either really achieved something or 30 people who consistently do amazing work, and we ask them to review the previous year’s cultural output. Today, two of those people are MJ Turpin and Adi Koen.
We ask each participant in 30 People On 2014 for four simple things. They tell us what movies we should’ve watched, what music we should’ve heard, the best thing about their 2014, and what they hope is to come in 2015. This is what they said…
MJ Turpin is an artist and the curator of the Kalashnikovv Gallery in Braamfontein.
Your Favorite Movie from 2014 (and why, if you dig):
Her from Spike Jonze or JODOROWSKY’S DUNE.
Her for the digital “future/present” in real time, and Dune for what Jodorowsky intended. To “To mutate young minds.”
Your Favorite Song from 2014 (we know this one’s hard so choose what comes to mind):
Your Best Moment of 2014 (this can be personal or something that impacted society as a whole):
Opening of the new Kalashnikovv Gallery space, my new personal artist studio and the Ray Ban Public Artwork scandal In Cape Town.
The Thing You’re Looking Forward To In 2015 (what do you know will happen, or hope will come around in 2015):
Kalashnikovv Gallery Program 2015.
New creative charity trust we’re working on.
Our new ArtFair – still untitled.
My next solo exhibition.
A new band with Khaya Bhubesii.

Your Favorite Movie from 2014 (and why, if you dig):
So I Google searched all the movies I could’ve watched over the 2014 period. They all looked very boring and I couldn’t remember any! I did rewatch Almost Famous though, and wow that movie is the best!! Cam (Eric Stonestreet) from Modern Family is even in it. My best part of the movie is when they all start singing Elton John’s Tiny Dancer on the bus. The soundtrack is beyond phenomenal and then the music life lessons… man, so many music life lessons. The youths of today should defs watch that movie.
Your Favorite Song from 2014 (we know this one’s hard so choose what comes to mind):
Taylor Swift – Shake It Off. That shit is catchy!
Your Best Moment of 2014 (this can be personal or something that impacted society as a whole):
I got a cat and named him Keith Richards. I built a space ship for work. I learnt how to drive a forklift. And I vommed on a very small airplane (that’s so many best moments).
The Thing You’re Looking Forward To In 2015 (what do you know will happen, or hope will come around in 2015):
I am looking forward to many new adventures, staying alive, reading books, learning things, being gracious and world peace?
